HYDRAshears and HYDRAcat change face of industry

Two new pieces of equipment designed by Transpacific’s Industrial Services team are shaving weeks off completion times.
The HYDRAshears and HYDRAcat are also improving the safety capabilities of the Transpacific teams working in the petrochemical industry.
The equipment includes HYDRAshears, which are externally powered hydraulic shears, and the HYDRAcat, which is a hydraulic driven skid steer loader.
Transpacific is using both when carrying out storage tank cleaning and repair work at major oil refineries in Australia.
Transpacific uses the HYDRAshears to cold cut internal heat coils from product storage tanks.
Traditionally these coils had to be removed using a pneumatic hacksaw and would take a team of several workers up to four weeks depending on the configuration of the coils and the size of the tank. This process has traditionally posed OHS challenges because of the explosive potential of the tanks.
During a recent job Transpacific carried out for a large oil company the HYDRAshears were used to cut through heating coils in a 60 metre diameter crude oil tank. The process took one equipment operator just two days to complete with none of the traditional risks.
Transpacific General Manager, Technical Projects, Phillip James said: “As well as cutting down on manual labour time, the shears minimise the risks associated with working in a confined space in potentially hazardous environments.”
“This Unit can be fitted with numerous attachments to substantially increase cleaning production rates and minimise risk,” he said.
The HYDRAcat, which is used to remove sludge from oil storage tanks, is reaping similar benefits for Transpacific’s clients. One worker can use the HYDRAcat to remove the sludge directly. Traditionally large teams would have been required to enter the tanks through 600 millimetre manholes and vacuum or shovel the sludge out.
